Inside the glacier: Astonishing underwater pictures from a maze carved in the ice

Sub zero: A diver swims through a tunnel carved into the underside of a glacier in Sassolo Lake, Switzerland, by changing water temperatures



These breath-taking images were taken of an underwater maze inside a glacier by an intrepid explorer.



Photographer Franco Banfi braved sub-zero temperatures to dive under thick ice and capture these remarkable pictures at Sassolo Lake, Switzerland, at considerable risk to his life.



The glaciers create extraordinary underwater caves and passages due to changes in temperature between the summer and winter months.

And the make the perfect project for Mr Banfi, 52, who explores even the smallest passages within the icy maze.



He said: 'In temperatures of just 2-3C or below it can be dangerous if you don't know the place and if you don't have experience in an ice environment.



'It gets quite dark depending on how much ice there is above your head at the surface - so in some places with thicker ice it gets dangerously dark.





Dangerous hobby: It can be extremely dark underneath the glaciers, depending on how thick the ice is, and most divers use a rope to find their way out again





'The underwater tunnels form when ice compacts in the winter months and in spring when it starts melting creating cracks and tunnels like in these pictures.



'I do risk my life but I have years of experience includign around 100 dives under the ice. It's the passion which drives me to get the perfect picture.'

Where youths had roamed the streets with bricks and bats just hours earlier, a new army had appeared.



Invoking London’s famous ‘Blitz spirit’, volunteers responded defiantly to the worst violence the city has witnessed in decades by rolling up their sleeves and helping in the clean-up.

Communicating on Twitter – the same social network used by the rioters – hundreds gathered in riot-ravaged neighbourhoods equipped with a mishmash of household cleaning brushes, gardening gloves and rolls of bin bags.



Outside Clapham Junction, 500 people brandished their brooms in the air as they waited for a police cordon to be lifted so they could begin healing the wounds of Monday night’s rampage.

'She's got a problem with eye make-up': Vivienne Westwood slams Duchess of Cambridge's penchant for heavy black liner

As the grande Dame of British fashion, Vivienne Westwood knows a thing or two about style. And she's certainly not shy about sharing her opinions on the subject.



When asked about the Duchess of Cambridge's look in a recent interview, the fashion designer, 70, called it 'ordinary', finding particular fault with her eye make-up.



She told the Sunday Times Magazine: 'I think she's got a problem with eye make-up. The sharp line around her eyes make her look hard. Either she should be smudgy or wear none.'





Sartorial verdict: Dame Vivienne, pictured at her Gold Label show in Paris last autumn, called the Duchess's look 'ordinary'





On style, she continued: 'It seems to me, that her image is "ordinary woman".



Therefore, High Street shopper. And I just think she should be an extraordinary woman, wherever she gets her clothes from.'



Dame Vivienne is not the first to criticise Catherine's heavy eyeliner. In an interview last month with Grazia Daily, Dutch fashion duo Viktor & Rolf also commented on the same thing.



They told the site: '[We'd like to see her wearing ] different make-up and hair - less eyeliner, less hair. It would bring out her natural beauty.'

The Duchess demonstrates some confidence when it comes to her beauty routine. She does her own make-up for official engagements, including her wedding, which was watched by two billion people around the globe. And on the recent Royal Tour to Canada and the U.S. she brought a hairdresser as part of her entourage, but no stylist or make-up artist.



Last week Kelly Osbourne said on the Tonight Show that Kate shouldn't recycle her wardrobe.



She told Jay Leno: 'In England they are like look how thrifty she's being, showing the British public that the Royals are in a recession as well. Only in this country they call it a faux pas.'



And in March, designer Matthew Williamson told the Telegraph: 'Kate isn't a fashion bunny. I don't know why everyone in fashion is waiting to see what she wears. I'm, like, thinking: get over it.'

Weathering all storms: A police officer in riot gear braved the rain in Brixton High Street last night as copycat rioting broke out across London. Masked youths clashed with police and smashed shop fronts in a second night of violence



London endured a second night of violence last night and in the early hours of this morning as questions were raised about the shooting by police of a suspected gangster.



In Enfield, South London, a mob of 200 anarchists smashed their way into shops and lobbed concrete slabs at police cars following Saturday’s riot in Tottenham.

A jewellery store, a McDonald's and a Tesco were set upon in Enfield, while in Brixton, South London, hundreds of teenagers looted a Foot Locker store before setting it on fire, requiring six engines to battle the blaze at 1.30am.



Police reported more than 100 arrests took place across the capital overnight. Commander Christine Jones, said: 'Officers responding to sporadic disorder in a number of boroughs made more than 100 arrests throughout last night and early this morning.

A fine line from fiasco: Moment daredevil acrobat slipped during record-breaking tightrope walk between two balloons

Walking along: Aishan begins his record attempt



Chinese acrobat Saimaiti Aishan, 27, set a new national record while preparing for a world record attempt at 650 feet above the ground.



Aishan, the nephew of Adili Wuxor, who is better known as 'Prince of the Tightrope', proved that the skill runs in the family after completing the feat in front of a packed crowd.



But not without losing his balance and falling from the rope.

He had to pause for a break after losing his balance, and experiencing difficulties with his balancing pole.



Then he almost fell off while celebrating.



While Aishan completed one crossing at 100 feet, he failed to cross at 328 feet, which is just half the height he is preparing to conquer in his bid to claim a fourth Guinness World Record.



The record attempt took place in China's Hunan Province on Saturday.

Story of world's first 'bionic' dolphin and his prosthetic tail is to become Hollywood blockbuster... and it's going to be in 3D

Dolphin Tale: Winter's life will be documented in a new Hollywood movie which will be shown in the UK in October



Watching her swim through the water you would think she's like any other dolphin, doing backflips and splashing around in her pool.



But this is Winter, the world's first bionic dolphin, whose heartwarming story has inspired a Hollywood blockbuster.



At just two months old she lost her mother and her tail in a crab trap.

After 18 months of painstaking work, £150,000 and nearly 50 prototypes, the pair managed to create a 30 inch silicone tail.



Winter, who only wears the limb for a few hours a day, wouldn't survive in the wild and constantly needs a replacement limb as she grows.



Staff at the aquarium also spend hours massaging her muscles every day to ensure she is comfortable.



Visitors have also been inspired by Winter and a number of servicemen who have been injured in Iraq and Afghanistan have benefited from the work done by Mr Carroll.



Because Winter's skin is so sensitive, a special gel had to be created so that the fake limb wouldn't irritate her.



The gel has been so successful it is now being used for humans too.

Brian Kolfage, who lost both legs and his right hand in Iraq, had such a severe reaction to the fake limbs he was unable to use them. But because of the breakthrough cream he is now able to walk again.



Young children visiting Winter are also inspired and find the courage to deal with their own deformities after meeting the inspirational dolphin.



Hannah Jenkins, 12, who was born without a left hand and forearm, said Winter helped her realise she too could survive.



Winter may never be the most elegant dolphin but, as she splashes about in the aquarium, it is safe to say that she probably doesn't care.



Dolphin Tale, directed by Charles Martin Smith, will be released in the UK in 3D this October.

Twenty-six police officers were being treated in hospital today following riots which broke out two days after a man was shot dead by police.

Scotland Yard said at least one of the officers had suffered head injuries after protesters clashed with police in Tottenham, north London.

Scotland Yard said this morning: 'There remain isolated pockets of criminality in the Tottenham area involving a small number of people. Officers are currently taking steps to deal with these incidents.'

In a statement, Commander Watson described the scenes of violence as 'distressing' for Londoners and the local community, and stressed that the safe of the public was 'of paramount importance to us'.

Shocktopuss! Horrifying moment squid comes back to life and jumps off plate

Staying alive: The squid is now in full swing and looks as if it's dancing

Diners in Japan looking for a moving experience over dinner can now order a squid that dances off their plate.

A restaurant has created a dish, named Odori don - literally meaning dancing squid rice bowl - by adding soy sauce to a fresh squid.

The high salt content in the sauce reacts with ions in cells of the squids' tentacles creating voltage differences, and making the squid move.

To prepare the dish, chefs at Ikkatei Tabiji, in Hakodate, Japan, first remove the head of the squid before serving the body, with tentacles intact, over a bowl of sushi rice.

Seasoned soy sauce is then poured over it.

As the squid is served so fresh, when the sauce is added signals across nerve cell membranes are re-activated temporarily, making it 'come back to life'

The body is then removed and prepared by the chef to be served as a side accompaniment.

The meal, which is proving popular with diners, costs around ¥2,000 or £15.30 per person

The dish is such a success that the restaurant have patented the name of the creation.

Now other restaurants in the area have begun making their own versions of the Hakodate dish, under different names.

Light show at the cathedral: Luminous lava lights up Sicilian town as Etna keeps on erupting

An act of God? Mount Etna's lava spews across the skyline behind the 16th-century cathedral of Zafferana Etnea shortly before midnight

Menacing and beautiful in equal measure, Mount Etna illuminates the cathedral of Zafferana Etnea with its latest violent eruptions.

In these stunning pictures, Europe's most active volcano appears to be spewing lava right onto the 19th century church.

The Sicilian municipality was in no immediate danger because the lava flowed into a valley, but flights had to be cancelled overnight because of the resulting ash.

Catania's Fontanarossa airport was shut from midnight to 7am this morning.

The Crisis Unit met at 1am to monitor the situation until the activity subdued and the flight schedule was back to normal after the first flight came in from Naples at 7.53am.

There have already been eight eruptions so far this year.

A blast in May, the fifth of 2011, caused major disruption when lava spewed onto its south-eastern slopes and winds swept ash further afield, stopping flights at Catania's airport.

Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe at 3,295 metres (10,810 feet).
